Leipzig/Halle Airport - integral part of the Central German economy

Owing to far-sighted developments, Leipzig/Halle Airport has become a trimodal hub that perfectly combines rail, road and air traffic. Seven million people live within a radius of 100 kilometres around the airport. For the people of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, Leipzig/Halle is a central airport.

Efficient infrastructure

Besides projects such as the development of the federal motorways and the railway network of Deutsche Bahn, the development of Leipzig/Halle Airport is part of the modernisation of the transport infrastructure in Central Germany. Thus, it is an essential prerequisite for the further economic development of the region.

The demand-actuated development of Leipzig/Halle Airport into an economic and efficient European airport has a considerable impact on the region. Due to the interaction with other major projects and its impetus, the airport acts as an independent economic factor and driving force for the region of Leipzig-Halle. These conditions contributed to the fact that companies such as Porsche, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Future Electronics and Amazon have decided to make substantial investments in the catchment area of Leipzig/Halle Airport. In the same way, the development of the chemical industries throughout the region, the Leipzig Trade Fair and the Leipzig cargo centre highlighted the economic potential of the Central German area, in the centre of which Leipzig/Halle Airport is located.

All set for the future

The decision of Deutsche Post World Net to locate the European DHL hub at Leipzig/Halle Airport is yet another positive signal for the entire economic region. The airport, its associates and Deutsche Post World Net are planning to make investments that ensure the further economic development of both the airport and the entire region. DHL’s decision to locate at Leipzig/Halle Airport increases the cargo companies’ interest in using the advantages available at the airport themselves.

With each increase in traffic, new jobs are created at the airport and in the region. With around 3,000 employees, the airport is already one of the biggest employers in the region. New jobs will be created by the location of DHL at Leipzig/Halle Airport. According to Deutsche Post World Net, the company is planning to invest approximately €300 million in the airport and to create around 3,500 jobs by 2012. Experience shows that another 7,000 jobs will be created in the region as a result of the activities of such a dynamic, global company.
