Reconstruction of Runway South
The symbolic first turn of the sod for the reconstruction of Runway South and its aprons on 31 August 2005 marked the beginning of another major stage of development of Leipzig/Halle Airport. In the course of its reconstruction, the 3,600m Runway South was realigned parallel to the 3,600m Runway North.
Completed on 5 July 2007, Runway South is located adjacent to a 53-hectare apron for cargo aircraft. From 2008, the Deutsche Post World Net subsidiary DHL will use this apron as a cargo transshipment terminal, initially for around 50 aircraft per day./p>
The basis of the reconstruction of Runway South was the planning assessment decision of the Leipzig regional council. The decision was made after only one year processing time, on 4 November 2004. The immediate effectiveness of the planning assessment decision, which also lays upon the airport an extensive noise reduction program, was confirmed by the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig on 19 May 2005. With this ruling, the court dismissed a petition for preliminary injunction.
