Pictures of the airport’s development
2007

The new Runway South is put into operation after only 2 years of building. The airport now has a parallel runway system. The construction of the hush house for engine test runs started in June, the “hoisting ceremony” already took place in August. After its completion at the end of 2007 test runs can now be carried out around the clock in the hangar. The border inspection post was handed over by the airport to the District Office of Delitzsch after only one year of construction.
2006

Despite the harsh winter, the construction works for the reconstruction of Runway South are on schedule. From a bird's eyes view, the outlines of the new 3,600m Runway South can already be discerned. The first taxiway that was adjusted to the new runway system will be put into operation in April. In mid-2006, the first concrete is applied to the runway. The completion of the new runway and the corresponding apron will take place next year.
2005

In the course of its reconstruction, the 3,600m Runway South is aligned parallel to the 3,600m Runway North. A 53-hectare apron for cargo aircraft is connected to Runway South which is to be completed by 2007. From 2008, Deutsche Post World Net subsidiary DHL will use this apron as a cargo transshipment terminal, initially for around 50 aircraft per day.
2003

Leipzig/Halle Airport completes its extensive development phase with the inauguration ceremony for the new Central Terminal on 30 June 2003. On this day, the airport station is integrated into the long-distance railway network of Deutsche Bahn. This marks the completion of the realisation of intermodality and thus the optimal link of rail, road and air traffic in one building.
2002

The new terminal building is taking shape. The 400m-long Mall, which is the connection between the new Central Terminal and the existing Terminal B, is glassed up and interior works begin. The multifunctional terminal with the integrated airport station and central check-in area will be completed by spring 2003.
2001

The construction of the new terminal building is making fast progress. A luggage conveyor system, the new luggage area and the central driveway are built and the central check-in area takes shape.
2000

In March, the inauguration ceremony for the development of the northern area of Leipzig/Halle Airport is held. Apart from the new Runway North it includes the control tower, taxiways and taxiway bridges, fire station and various other facilities. The construction of the new airport terminal is in full swing.
1999

The multi-storey car park, which is part of the new Central Terminal, can be inaugurated in the middle of the year and all other projects are also on schedule. Runway North and the control tower are nearing completion. The topping-out ceremony for the fire station is held.
1998

The construction work for the development of the northern area of the airport commences at the beginning of the year: the construction works on the new runway, on the Central Terminal and on the control tower are performed simultaneously. Moreover, first preparations for environmental compensation measures are made.
1997

Mid-1997, the development of the northern area of Leipzig/Halle Airport begins with an administrative act: the planning assessment decision is handed over.
