Development since 1990

Since 1990, Leipzig/Halle Airport has been developed according to demand. This way, the airport takes into account the rapid development of global air traffic and presents itself today as one of the most advanced airports in Europe.

Back in the early 1990s, the stage was set for the modernisation and development of the infrastructure at Leipzig/Halle Airport. This marked the beginning of a long-term development plan, the gradual implementation of which made the airport an internationally competitive traffic hub.

Terminal B

With the opening of Terminal B in 1996, a milestone in the development of Leipzig/Halle into a state-of-the-art European airport was reached. For the first time, Leipzig/Halle Airport featured a check-in facility that met international standards.

Runway North

Putting the 3,600-metre Runway North into operation in March 2000, was a crucial accomplishment for successfully placing Leipzig/Halle on the international market.

Central Terminal

On 30 June 2003, a trimodal state-of-the-art Central Terminal was put into service at Leipzig/Halle Airport, perfectly linking air, rail and road traffic. The new central building accommodates the InterCityExpress-capable airport railway station, a multi-storey car park, the central check-in area with integrated luggage inspection and a mall. Passengers have the opportunity to directly access the check-in area from the car park or airport railway station. The slip road leading over the motorway A14 to the first level of the new Central Terminal integrates public transport as well as taxi and shuttle services.

The appealing and very transparent architecture, which is dominated by glass and steel constructions, combines functionality with a maximum of travelling convenience. The demand-actuated development of the airport contributes to it continuing to be an attractive and efficient traffic hub.

Runway South

The first symbolic turn of the sod for the reconstruction of Runway South was celebrated in August 2005. After two years of construction, on 5 July 2007, the 3,600m runway was inaugurated with representatives of politics, culture and business. With the realigned Runway South, Leipzig/Halle Airport has a parallel runway system at its disposal which can be used for all types of aircraft (no distance or payload restrictions).

A 53-hectare apron for cargo aircraft is located adjacent to Runway South. From 2008, DHL will use this apron as a cargo transshipment terminal, initially for around 50 aircraft per day. Cargo Area South is also directly connected to the runway, providing further development opportunities for logistics and air traffic companies.
