Trimodal Leipzig/Halle Airport: rail, road, and air traffic combined

Opened in 2003, the Central Terminal of Leipzig/Halle Airport acts as a perfect interface between the traffic on the ground and passenger handling. Rail and road traffic are distributed to two levels, right below the check-in area. The integrated airport station constitutes the lower level, while the upper level is used as a driveway for cars, buses and coaches.

The Central Terminal, accommodating the InterCityExpress-capable airport railway station, the central check-in area, the multi-storey car park and the Mall in one building, was completed in 2003.

The excellent link between the rail, road and air traffic networks results in a significant expansion of the catchment area of Leipzig/Halle Airport. When this multifunctional terminal, which also hosts a broad range of service and shopping facilities, was put into service, Leipzig/Halle Airport increased its capacity at present to 4.5 million passengers per year.

Airport railway station

The opening of the integrated station, Leipzig/Halle Airport established a direct link to the long-distance railway network of Deutsche Bahn. The airport station features two fully canopied platforms which are capable of handling all types of trains. Information and service facilities (train destination displays, Deutsche Bahn information desk, technical facilities) as well as seating and luggage trolley areas are located in the middle section of the approx. 400m-long platforms.

Central check-in area

The excellent location of the new terminal in the central area of the airport allowed the centralisation of passenger-related handling processes. You will always have easy access to the check-in counters regardless of whether you arrive by car or train. The terminal offers several opportunities for shopping, relaxing or taking a stroll while you are waiting for your flight.

Easy access (airport)

Passengers arriving by train can conveniently access the check-in area via the lifts or escalators. The same applies for passengers who park their vehicle in the multi-storey car park with 2,700 parking spaces.
After checking-in, passengers reach the Terminal B security area via the mall. The departure lounges and the arrivals area are also located in Terminal B.

Logistics area of European importance

Against a backdrop of increasing capacity bottlenecks at other European cargo terminals, Leipzig/Halle Airport is a competitive and perfectly located alternative for all air traffic and logistics companies planning to take advantage of the growing markets, especially in Eastern Europe and Asia.

Due to the consistent and market-oriented development of the airport, which was only possible thanks to the tremendous support of the shareholders and especially the state of Saxony, Leipzig/Halle Airport is developing into one of the most significant locations for logistics services in Europe.

2009 - DHL and Lufthansa Cargo launch a joint airline

Leipzig/Halle Airport is the home base for the first cargo carrier in Central Germany. The establishment of the new, globally operating cargo airline AeroLogic further boosts Leipzig/Halle’s position as the most important logistics location in the region and will create hundreds of direct as well as indirect jobs.

With eight new Boeing 777-freight aircraft the joint venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo will further increase the airfreight and express business from and to Asia as well as North America that already operates from Leipzig/Halle Airport.
