Ecological Power Generation

A cogeneration unit operating on the basis of combined heat and power has supplied all of the airport’s clearance facilities and technical service areas with warm water, electricity, and heating or cooling since 1996. The core of this power station unit is gas motors with connected generators which produce their own electric energy. The energy created is then fed into the airport’s internal electricity network.

A cooling water circuit and a heat exchanger are used to provide warm water and facility heating and in the summer, an absorption convertor is in used to cool. As a result, the system uses a large percentage of its primary energy.

Together with the use of environmentally friendly natural gas, the cogeneration unit plays an important part in improving the airport’s environmental balance.

Flughafen Leipzig/Halle GmbH is currently examining the use of a photovoltaic system within the framework of an academic thesis project. This could be installed on the roof of a building built in the future. The results are currently being analyzed and assessed.
