Air Quality

Leipzig/Halle Airport continually examines the air quality in the vicinity of the airport. The focus of these examinations is the possible contamination of the air as a result of flight and apron operations. These voluntary investigations determine the current, possible pollution levels at and around the airport and make them transparent to the public.

Among other techniques, so called biomonitoring is used in these studies.

“Bioindication or biomonitoring is to be understood as the use of organisms or colonies of organisms whose vital functions are so closely connected to certain environmental factors that conclusions may be drawn regarding these environmental factors” (Soure in German: ADV).

The TÜV Süd conducted examinations using green cabbage plants. In addition, bee colonies have been in place in the vicinity of the airport since 2009 for the purpose of biomonitoring.
