Noise Measurement

Flughafen Leipzig/Halle GmbH operates an aircraft noise measurement system as required by law. This is made up of 10 modern, stationary aircraft noise measurement stations. This guarantees constant supervision of the continuous sound level and the peak levels (individual events).

Collection and Analysis of the Data

Measurements are continually recorded every second at each station. The levels recorded over time allow, with the help of location-specific parameters, to filter out foreign sources of noise such as ground vehicles, birds or rustling leaves.

At night the measurements – noise occurrences – from the previous day are transferred to a central computer in the airport. Here, air traffic movements are then assigned to the individual occurrences based on radar data from German air traffic control. This means that every aircraft noise occurrence (peak level) is correlated to the corresponding aircraft movement.

Using meteorological data, it is also checked whether extreme weather conditions (e.g. high winds) were present. If this is the case, the noise occurrences which happened under these extreme conditions are automatically marked and removed from the statistics.

These aircraft noise occurrences and correlations allow for the calculation of the most important acoustic characteristics e.g. the DIN 45643 specified acoustic continuous sound level.

The data is then checked by the Saxonian State Ministry for Economy and Labor’s Department of Air Traffic as well as Leipzig/Halle Airport’s Noise Protection Commission.

The airport’s aircraft noise measurement system is supplemented by 4 mobile measurement stations which are of the same quality as the stationary stations. These can be set up in local areas at the request of local city or village councils or citizen initiatives and in coordination with the Aircraft Noise Commission. This ensures the annual review of the noise protection measures and the protection area by the Aircraft Noise Commission and the responsible authorities.

Additionally, from 2007 – 2009 a ground noise measurement station from the State Office of Environment and Geology was employed in the expanded protection area, south of the DHL apron area.

Independent of this, Leipzig/Halle Airport conducts nightly measurements in selected sleeping areas for the purpose of reviewing and checking of the implementation of passive noise protection measures.
