Duties of the works fire service
Ensuring air traffic safety in accordance with ICAO
According to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Leipzig/Halle Airport belongs to fire protection category 10. Therefore the ICAO has set the following requirements (Annex 14):
- mobile water volume: 32,200l; ejection rate per minute: 11,200l; thereof first vehicle 50 per cent of ejection rate
- additional extinguishing material powder: 450kg
- minimum three main extinguishing vehicles; reaction time: max. 3 minutes
Preventive and active fire protection
- Provide fire protection technical advice for building projects Prepare and update fire regulations
- Conduct fire regulation compliance inspections
- Prepare and verify evacuation procedures
Rescue service
- Carry out paramedic training, disabled transport service
- Train in first aid and early defibrillation
- Check and refill medical boxes
- Provide first aid safety for events
Technical assistance
- Clear spilled fuel
- Assist with traffic accidents
- Clear dangerous materials
- Free people from jammed lifts
- Support work at high levels with the Universal fire-fighting vehicle (ULF)
Training
- Regular theoretical and practical training
- Two- monthly exercises per watch department
- Two “hot” exercises per year
- One breathing protection exercise per year (ASÜ)
- Every two years a major exercise
- Training of volunteer personnel of the works volunteer fire service in accordance with fire service regulation 2/2 (basic training, ongoing training)
Other duties
- Fire protection technical safety for fuelling of aircraft
- Maintain, care for and test breathing apparatus
- Clean working and special clothing
- Responsibility for visitor tours of the fire stations
- Hydrant inspections
- Inspect and maintain hand-held extinguishers
- Hose washing and inspection and repairs for local fire services
- Fire extinguisher training for airport personnel and other firms
- Create action and rescue plans Issue welding authorisations
- Fire protection inspections before events
- Fire protection lectures
- Support winter road clearance service
