Leipzig/Halle Airport 2001-2003

Bauarbeiten

The construction work on the new Central Terminal, that contains the InterCityExpress-capable station, check-in area, mall and car park in one building, was carried out at the same time as the construction of Runway North. The topping-out for the new central check-in area took place in November 2001.

Bauarbeiten 2002

The glass construction for the new Central Terminal started in January 2002. The interior work of the new check-in facility was finished by the end of 2002. The completion of the terminal and luggage conveyor system facilities was followed by months of technical test runs. On 30 March 2003, the check-in and service area of the Central Terminal was opened.

On 30 June 2003, the completion of the integrated airport station and its connection to the long-distance railway network of Deutsche Bahn marked the end of the first stage of the airport’s development. The investment for the first stage amounted to approximately €1 billion. Within a decade, Leipzig/Halle Airport was turned into a state-of-the-art air traffic hub in the heart of Germany, excelling through appealing architecture and compliance with high international standards.

Bauarbeiten 2003

On 4 November 2003, Flughafen Leipzig/Halle GmbH applied for a permit for redevelopment of Runway South, since it had, as predicted, reached the end of its operating life. This step was a precaution for maintaining the airport’s market value in the long run, enabling a rapid realisation as required. During the complete makeover of Runway South it was also realigned. This was to prevent residential areas in around Leipzig and Halle located in the approach corridor from being affected by take-offs and landings. The new 3,600m Runway South was to be aligned parallel with Runway North. The resulting runway system was to enable simultaneous operation of both runways. Against a backdrop of increasing capacity bottlenecks at other German airports, this advantage provides Leipzig/Halle Airport with a unique competitiveness that is of great significance for both passenger and cargo traffic.
