Leipzig/Halle Airport 1999-2000

The granting of the building permit for the new Central Terminal in February 1998 marked a new stage in the extensive development of the airport, which was to substantially alter the airport’s appearance in 1999 and 2000. The first module of the new Central Terminal, the six storey car park, was put into operation in June 1999. The opening of the 350m long multi-storey car park, which accommodates 2,700 parking spaces, increased the total capacity of Leipzig/Halle Airport to over 5,000.
With the inauguration of the new 3,600m Runway North on 24 March 2000, a new important chapter in the airport’s history was written: the Central German airport became an intercontinental airport. Now Leipzig/Halle Airport meets the requirements for connecting the Central German region to centres of economy and tourism in the whole world. Since the summer season 2000, holiday flights have operated non-stop from Leipzig/Halle to Asia as well as to the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The runway, which was completed in the record time of 5 years, features a Cat IIIb instrument landing system and, like the former 2,500m Runway South, may be operated around the clock.
A dedicated fire station was built next to the runway. One day prior to the operation of Runway North, German ATC started work in the new 73m control tower. The construction of the check-in area and the mall was started in September 2000. These facilities as well as the multi-storey car park and the integrated airport railway station constitute the Central Terminal.
