History of the airport

In 2007, Leipzig/Halle Airport celebrated its 80th anniversary. On 25 April 1927, the airport, which was very modern for its time, was put into operation north of Schkeuditz - roughly halfway between Leipzig and Halle.

Therefore, the history of aviation seems to have a distinct starting point and one would expect a continuous development into the efficient airport of today. However, the history of aviation in this region is complex: the ups and downs of the development can only be understood in the context of the changeable German history of the 20th century. Two world wars as well as the political tensions of the Weimar Republic, the National Socialists’ war preparations and the economic and political situation in the post-war era had a lasting effect on the development of the airports in and around Leipzig and Halle. Therefore, we will go back to the beginnings of aviation in the towns of Leipzig and Halle, which led to the airports Halle-Nietleben and Leipzig-Mockau. Afterwards we will present the chronicle of the facilities at Schkeuditz from the beginnings to today’s Leipzig/Halle Airport.
