Information for Handicapped Air Passengers

New rights for European air passengers

Leipzig/Halle Airport is designed to be barrier free. Sanitary facilities, lifts, telephones, shops and restaurants are easily accessible.

Since the new “Act for the Assistance of Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM) in Air Travel” (EG 1107/2006 of 26.07.2008)) has come into effect, certain assistance services are carried out by the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V., Regionalverband Nord-/Westsachsen.

Free services

The following services are free of charge if you:

  • are permanently confined to a wheelchair
  • are unable to climb stairs
  • require a wheelchair for longer journeys

Departure

Assistance:

  • with checking in your luggage
  • with security and passport controls and checkpoints
  • to the gate and with the priority boarding of the aircraft

If you would like to take your electric wheelchair on your journey, it must be checked in as bulky luggage. It is therefore necessary to use a folding wheelchair for the trip to the gate. A special wheelchair is then used while boarding the gate.
If you arrive with a manual wheelchair you may remain in it until shortly before boarding when the change to the special wheelchair will take place. Your wheelchair will then be loaded into the cargo hold of the aircraft.
